Happy New Year!

These New Year activities will help to usher in a brand new year.

January Starts the Year

January, February, March, April, May.

The first five months are A-OK.

June and July, August, September,

How many summers can you remember?

October, November, December's the end,

Any month's a good time to make a new friend.

Fifty-two weeks or twelve months in a year,

As each month ends, a new one is here.

Winter and fall, summer and spring.

These are the seasons that each year brings.

The days in a year come to three hundred sixty-five.

Isn't it great to be alive?

This poem was written by Risa Jordan and is included in "A Poem A Day" by Helen H. Moore, Scholastic, 1997.

It presents an opportunity to teach or review the months in sequential order and for children to discuss the calendar. Why are there twelve months? How did each month get its name? Do other cultures use the same calendar as our's? What are the names of their months? Why are there 365 days in a year? What causes Leap Year? A calendar is a great tool for Social Studies and Science!

New Year Puzzles

January was named after the Roman god, Janus. He was said to have two faces and could look both forward and backward simultaneously. On January 1, we look back on the previous year and ahead to the new one. Solve this FACE puzzle, then, by changing one letter at a time while keeping the letter order the same. Each change will result in a new word until all the original letters have been changed and you can LOOK ahead to a wonderful new year!

LOOK

It was considered good luck, in Scotland, if a dark-haired man was the first person to enter the door of your house on New Year's Day. Boy, are you GLAD that your dark-haired uncle just put his FOOT in your door! Solve this puzzle with the same directions as above.

FOOT

GLAD

Every New Year's Day, in Pasadena, California, the Tournament of Roses Parade is seen by millions of people. The floats are made entirely of real flowers! Solve the flower riddles below according to this secret code:

1=H 5=A 9=S 13=Y 17=P

2=D 6=W 10=I 14=V

3=O 7=E 11=N 15=L

4=T 8=B 12=U 16=R

What did the big flower say to the little flower? 1 10, 8 12 2!

Why are flowers so lazy? 4 1 7 13 5 16 7 5 15 6 5 13 9 10 11 8 7 2.

Why is a spring garden like your mouth? 8 3 4 1 1 5 14 7 4 12 15 10 17 9.

Create the rest of the code and make up more riddles for your friends and family!

These puzzles and riddles are from Instructor's Big Book of Holiday Puzzles by Diane Hellriegel, Scholastic, 1985.

New Year's Resolutions

1. Have children write 20 realistic New Year's Resolutions and circle six they think are the best. Place a star by the resolutions they think no one else would have thought of! Let them share.

2. Divide your class into small groups and have them write funny New Year's Resolutions they think the principal, teacher, office staff, cafeteria staff, janitorial staff, school bus driver, parents, babysitter, or anyone else they know should make!

These two ideas are adapted from Springboards to Creative Thinking by Patricia Tyler Muncy, The Center for Applied Research in Education, Inc., 1985.

3. Make New Year's smocks for young children and have the children decorate them, around the edges, with crayons, markers, or paint. Write one of their favorite resolutions in the middle and let them wear their smocks proudly!

4. For a bulletin board, outline a large, old-fashioned sleigh on brown butcher paper; write HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US! in the middle of it; cut out and staple to the bulletin board. Using 8"-diameter circles of construction paper or the middle of small paper plates, have children draw their faces. They can use yarn for hair, felt for hats or earmuffs, and other odds-and-ends. Staple finished faces, starting at the rim of the sleigh, to give the impression of a crowd of children riding in the sleigh. Along the sides of the sleigh, put up children's resolutions or goals for the new year.

These two ideas are from Macmillan Seasonal Activity Packs, Macmillan Educational Company, 1986.

New Year Recipe

In Holland and other European countries, many people eat something shaped like a ring on New Year's Day in the belief that if brings good luck. A ring symbolizes completion...in this case, the circle of the entire year, with month following month. Here is a simple recipe you might want to try.

Pineapple New Year Rings - Makes 20 servings

1. Drain the juice, reserving it, from two 12-oz cans of unsweetened pineapple rings. Place one ring on each plate.

2. Place 1/4 cup of the 2 1/2 pints of cottage cheese in the center of each ring and pour 1-2 TB of the reserved juice over it.

3. Enjoy while talking about the upcoming year!

New Year Game

In keeping with the 'ring' concept, play this circular game to welcome the New Year. Have fun!

Ring on a String - Grades 2-6

Have a string long enough for all players to hold and an inexpensive ring large enough to slide along the string.

Place the ring on the string and tie the ends together. With children sitting or standing in a circle, they should hold the string with their palms down; one child, the 'detective,' stands in the middle. The players in the circle pass the ring from one to the other as the detective tries to decide who is holding it. If he is right, the two players exchange places. If the detective has guessed wrong five times, he sits in the circle and is replaced by the last person he thought had it.

To all of our customers, subscribers, and viewers, here's to a Healthy, Happy New Year!!

The recipe and game come from Macmillan Seasonal Activity Packs, Macmillan Educational Company, 1986.

I hope these ideas are useful and have inspired your own creative thinking!

Christmas lights, festive spirits and the traditional covering of snow and ice beneath foot all add to the ambience of Vienna on New Year's Eve itself. Alcohol Detox After The New Year Party

The parties over the New Year are over. You have had a merry time with your family and friends. But you are now suffering from the effects of having one glass of wine too many. A splitting headache and stomach pains are making you sick and miserable.

You long to be up and about. So what remedies are available for a faster recovery?

Firstly, if you are throwing up, then it is good sign. Your body is rejecting the alcohol in your body. It is far better to remove it rather than have it in your body.

You are likely to be dehydrated. Alcohol makes you visit the toilet more often. When your organs get deprived of water, they try to take their water supply from elsewhere, including the brain cells. You get a hangover headache when your brain starts to shrink due to water loss.

Hence, the obvious remedy is to load up on liquids. Drink plenty of water in the next 1-2 days, so that it also enhances the flushing out of the toxins from your body.

Liquids can be taken in several forms. The first is obviously warm water. Warm water helps to calm your drugged stomach. Cold water just won't do. Add a touch of lemon to help you calm your stomach.

You can also take warm water in a herbal detox tea concoction. A favourite Ayurvedic herbal recipe for this: boil some cumin, coriander and fennel in boiling water and then drink. This recipe helps to soothe your gastric pains and to aid in digestion. Also a good suggestion is to try mint tea to settle your upset stomach.

Instead of stuffing more food into your stomach over the next few days, try juices. Freshly squeezed juices help to ensure that you are still packed with vitamins while your stomach takes a break. Vegetable juices are excellent as an aid in calming your stomach. Do not however buy the juices in a packet.

Get sufficient rest and sleep while your body enzymes process the alcohol in your system. Alcohol does make you feel sleepy so it is important to obey your body's call for rest.

Obviously, you should abstain from consuming more alcoholic drinks while your body recovers. Slowly ease into a healthy diet. The next time you drink, remember about what you feel the morning after. Drink one glass less and you will thank me for it.

How to Throw a New Years Party : Healthy Food Ideas for a New Year's Eve Party

New Year Traditions Have a Variety of Faces

As the oldest of all holidays, New Year, is a time of rebirth, which has its origin in ancient Babylon, nearly 4000 years ago. It was originally thought to have been celebrated on March 15th. Julius Caesar made January 1st as New Year's day, in 46. B.C.

New Year Resolution

The original favourite New Year resolution was to return borrowed farm tools, in ancient Babylon.

Still every year thousands of people around the world, say goodbye to the old year and promise themselves a new beginning with New Year resolutions. Yet these resolutions are the most breakable promises in the world, for come January 15th, most have been forgotten.

Fear and custom is the source of many of the traditions that surround the celebration. Perhaps none more strange than the source of gathering with your friends and family at midnight. It was believed that what you did on the first day of the year set the pattern for the whole year. Gathering together with those you loved in the first few moments of the New Year, was thus very important.

United States of America:

In Times Square, New York, thousands come together to watch a ball do a one-minute descent, heralding in midnight. The first iron and wood ball was dropped in 1907. The current Waterford Crystal ball, with a six foot diameter, weighs 1,070 pounds. There are many people who would like to know what the crystal ball ushers in this year, for a world in deep financial trouble. The word is that fortune telling is one business that is on the rise.

Auld Lang Syne

Throughout every English speaking country in the world, the New Year is ushered in with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. A song that is renown for containing the most forgettable lyrics in the world. Lyrics which very few people would even understand. Here are the lyrics for you to have fun with New Year's eve:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne.

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear,

For auld lang syne,

We'll tak a cup of kindness yet,

For auld lang syne!

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,

And surely I'll be mine,

And we'll tak a cup o kindness yet,

For auld lang syne!

We twa hae run about the braes,

And pou'd the gowans fine,

But we've wander'd monie a weary fit,

Sin auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidl'd in the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine,

But seas between us braid hae roar'd

Sin auld lang syne.

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,

And gie's a hand o thine,

And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,

For auld lang syne.

Although not written by him, Robert Burns first published the song 1796. He had learned the song from an old Scottish man.

Made popular by Guy Lombardo, it was played at the Warldorf Astoria, New York, every New Year's eve from 1930 to 1976. This included the years of the Second World War.

Greek Traditions:

In Greece the symbol of a baby is still used on New Year banners. It was meant to symbolize the annual rebirth.

Japanese Tradition:

New Year is a time when all misunderstandings and quarrels are forgiven. This was represented by the forget-the-year party, as well as sending New Year cards.

Netherlands Traditions:

The Netherlands lit up the New Year and purged the old, with bonfires.

Chinese Traditions:

China, being the home of fireworks, believes demons are chased away and good luck brought in. If you are wandering through China on Chinese New Year, (February) you will not be able to tell the difference between gun fire and fireworks that continuously go off around you. A second Chinese tradition is to throw out your old furniture and buy new. Of course you leave your old furniture on the pavement, for others to pick up for free. What is old to you, is new to someone else.

Spanish Traditions:

In Spain you will get to eat twelve grapes. One for each good month in the coming year.

English Traditions:

An old English tradition is to make sure you eat a piece of Christmas cake for 12 different cakes, so as to ensure a year’s prosperity. Perhaps that was the Queen’s problem when she had her “Annus horribilus”. She didn’t get a slice from enough different cakes.

So we have only touched just one or two of New Year traditions. You can check out this really great site for traditions, world wide.

New Year's Eve on a Budget

If you are planning a New Years Eve party, you probably already realize you need to set a budget for your party. This is important because going over budget on your party can cause a significant financial strain on the host of the party. You likely want to provide a great New Years Eve party for all of your guests but you do not want to go into considerable debt to do this. The best way to throw a successful New Years Eve party is to set a budget based on the amount of cash you have available and working within that budget to create the most spectacular New Years Eve party possible. This article will examine the importance for setting a budget for your New Years Eve party and will offer advice for setting your budget for each aspect of the party.

The first step in setting a budget for your New Years Eve party is to first consider the total amount of money you wish to spend. Ideally this amount will be equal to the amount of money you have available to spend and will not cause you to go into debt to throw the party. However, hosts who have a very limited amount of funds available may opt to use a credit card to throw their party knowing they will be going into debt for the party. Once you have an overall budget, you can set individual budgets for each element of the party.

Some of the individual elements to consider when planning a New Years Eve party are location, invitation, decorations, food, beverages, entertainment and incidental items. When considering these items, the host should prioritize these items to determine which elements are most important. This will give the host a good idea of how to distribute the available funds. For example if the host decides that food and beverages are more important than entertainment, she will likely allot a larger portion of the budget to food and beverages than she would to entertainment. Likewise if she values entertainment over food and beverages she will likely allot more money to entertainment than she does to food and beverages. Once the priorities are determined the host should assign a percentage of the total budget to each of the expenses on their list. This percentage should be based on the importance of the expense as well as other factors such as overall cost of the items. The host may consider the invitations to be important but they are also relatively expensive. The host may opt to assign a large percentage of the budget to the invitations but it shouldn't be a higher percentage than more expensive items such as the food or entertainment receive.

The most important aspect of setting a budget for your New Years Eve party is to carefully follow that budget. As purchases are made for the party, it is important to document each purchase and the price of the purchase to ensure the budget is not being exceeded. If the host exceeds the budget in one category, it will be necessary to decrease the budget in another category to ensure the overall budget is not exceeded. It is also important to keep the overall budget in mind when making each purchase to ensure you will meet your overall financial goals.

Pine Cone Crafts - Homemade Christmas Decorations

If you are decorating your home for the holidays on a budget, there are so many possibilities to make your home look gorgeous and festive using inexpensive items. One great items to use to spruce up your home for Christmas is pines cones. In many places, you can get pine cones for free right from your own back yard. If you do not live near an area where you would have access to free pine cones, they can be purchased inexpensively from most any craft store. Decorating your home with holiday crafts made from pine cones are very simple to do and are even an easy enough project for children to participate.

Pine cones can be used for ornaments for the Christmas tree. One simple project for children and adults alike is to decorate the pine cone with glue and glitter. Tie a string to the cone and hang on the tree.

Another beautiful project is to paint the pine cone with a brush or spray paint in holiday colors. Glitter can also be sprinkled on the cone before the paint dries to give it a frosted, sparkly look. The painted cones can be used for tree ornaments with string or ribbon added to hang on the tree. Another way to use the painted cones is as a centerpiece on your coffee table or dining room table. Place the painted cones in a bowl or basket and add some greenery too, if desired.

Decorated or natural, plain pine cones can also be added to wreaths for a wonderful look. Pine cones added to garland and ribbons on a fireplace mantle give a simple but elegant look to your holiday decor.

Christmas decorating on a budget does not need to be skimpy, cheap or unflattering. By using your creativity and a small amount of inexpensive supplies, you can decorate your home beautifully and receive many compliments from your family and holiday guests.

Outside Christmas Decorations - How to Make a Christmas Light Show

The ultimate goal of anyone who loves to decorate their yard for Christmas is to set up a full light show that includes music. These shows can be difficult to set up, but they are spectacular to see and are well worth the effort.

Here are some steps to get your started on creating your own show:

Do your Research.

Before going any further, be aware that setting up a Christmas lightshow as part of your outside Christmas decorations take a lot of time and patience. It can be a great hobby, but it's not as easy as plugging some lights in flipping a switch. So, if you are ready, keep reading.

You are going to need a few items to make this work:

1. A computer to do the programming.

2. A light controller with multiple channels. This is what controls the lights.

3. A software program to program the light controller. This will define when the lights turn on and off in relation to the music.

4. An FM transmitter to broadcast your music. Another option is a pair of speakers on your front porch, but it is unlikely that the neighbors appreciate the same song playing over and over again.

5. The lights! For a complete effect, this should include not just regular lights, but icicle lights, net lights and yard displays.

Organize and Plan.

Now you are getting down to the fun part. To make the show work, you will need to sit down with pencil and paper and design your system. Decide what music you want to play (preferably something that has to do with Christmas), and where the decorations will be. Your plan should include a drawing of your front yard, with sketches and notes on how the show will work.

Buy Your Equipment and Decorations

Now that you have your plan, you are ready to buy your decorations. This can get expensive fast, so do some research to make sure you aren't overpaying. I suggest going through the internet for the software and control box for the lights. A search in Google or Yahoo should yield several results and allow you to compare several options.

Test, Test, and Test!

It's important enough to say again: Test, Test, and Test! The first thing you should do is set up your controller for a single set of lights and make sure you can get it to turn on and off. Then get it to turn on and off to music. Then add a second set of lights and make sure you can get that one to turn on and off. See why this takes so long? It can be tedious, but the results are well worth it.

Set It All Up

After everything is programmed, it's just a matter of setting it up. Hang the lights, set up the displays, and plug it in.

Now, all you have left to do is sip hot cocoa and watch your neighbors scramble to get their decorations looking half as good as yours!

Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

Christmas Tree Farms Benefit the Environment

The Christmas Trees we grow benefit the environment.
Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farms, such as Lovell Tree Farm, benefit the environment long before you take home the tree for the Holidays.

Real Christmas trees are a benefit to the environment from the time they are planted until after the holiday season when they can be recycled.

While growing,Real Christmas trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. This helps prevent the earth-warming greenhouse effect.

Every acre of Christmas trees grown produces the daily oxygen requirement for 18 people. In the United States there are approximately 1 million acres of growing Christmas trees; that means that 18 million people a day are supplied with oxygen thanks to Christmas trees.

The farms that grow Christmas trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for wildlife while creating scenic green belts. Often, Christmas trees are grown on soil that are marginal for other crop.

After Christmas, Real Christmas trees are often recycled and have many uses.

Christmas trees are biodegradable -- the trunk and branches can be used as mulch for gardens, parks or in animal stalls. The mulch provides a protective barrier for the roots of other plants and vegetation while preventing weeds from growing. The mulch then decomposes, providing the nutrients plants need to thrive.

Recycling programs are a fast - growing trend in communities throughout the nation. Ask the tree farmer where you purchase a tree.

Some communities use Christmas trees to make effective sand and soil erosion barriers, especially at beaches and on river beds. Sunk into private fish ponds trees make excellent refuge and feeding areas for fish.

Before recycling, Christmas trees can be used to make bird feeders, adding color and excitement to the winter garden. Utilize orange slices, suet, and seed to attract the birds. They will come for the food and stay for the shelter in the branches.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS REMOVE DECORATIONS, ORNAMENTS, AND WIRES FROM THE TREE YOU ARE RECYCLING.

Get Your Christmas Decor Right: Make The Most Of Xmas

When considering Christmas Decor the initial thing you should do is to make a list of everything you want to decorate. Make those decisions with the entire family. Physically get outside and point out where you would like to place certain decorations. Then, you should decide what types of decorations you want to put out. Do you want a certain colour theme? Do you want a manger scene in your front yard? These things are essential when choosing a Christmas decor.

If you want to host your Christmas decorating materials is in your own back yard. Sticks and twigs can be shaped and knotted to create rustic stars to hang from your tree or porch. Acorns and pinecones can be sprayed gold and silver, or simply left alone for a more natural look. Hang from the tree branches or fill a basket for your fireplace hearth or coffee table. Pretty branches from boxwood or other garden plants can be molded around a wreath form or placed in a jar for a natural looking centerpiece. And don't overlook the beauty and simplicity of a basket of pine boughs adorning your table as well.

Choosing a decor doesn't have to be hard work either. Just get your entire family involved. Ask them their opinions, what they think would look best on this bush or this tree. What kind of Christmas tree should you buy- a real one or a fake one? By getting your family's opinion on every little detail, you should be able to come up with a simple Christmas decor that suits everyone's tastes. Having to decorate the whole house is a daunting task, but it is one that I heartily enjoy. Getting to spend time with my kids and my husband without the worries of the day is a nice change.

When choosing a Christmas decor, make sure that you keep in mind that Christmas isn't always about what your garden looks like or how much cash you fork out, it's about bringing the family together towards one goal, it's about conveying that Christmas spirit and hopefully making other people follow suit, like your neighbors. Spreading this Christmas joy is what Christmas is all about and it's also what finding a good Christmas decor that everyone can agree with. Christmas time only comes once a year, choose a decor you can be proud of.

With a tiny bit of sneakiness and lots of artistic show and creativity, your home can be turned into the Xmas dream that you are yearning for. By using supplies that you find around your home and garden, your Xmas decorating will please your whole family without putting a dent into your finances.

Tips on Buying and Storing Christmas Decors

The moment Thanksgiving is over, Christmas decorations and ornaments are soon displayed at the stores. The usual eye-catching bits and pieces fill the malls as well as every local store. Christmas music fills the air, Christmas trees reaching up as high as 12 feet using different color themes are visible and people start to hang up decorations in their homes or even outside their yard. Some overdo it, some use classy style while others consider practicality and opt to use less decorations as possible. Some homeowners have to touch it up a bit more whereas others have to tone it down a little.

These decorations help set everyone in the mood for the holiday season. Somehow it exudes something magical seeing beautifully decorated homes and sparkling lights lined down the streets with snow adding more enchantment to the best time of the year.

In buying Christmas decors, special care should be taken into consideration as well budget allocation. Most malls will give you a wide range of decors to choose from but most of them are a little bit expensive. Thus, it is advisable to purchase these items after the holiday is over where you can avail huge discounts. This is a great way to save some cash on these items as their prices are rather high just before the Christmas holidays but drop to very low costs soon thereafter, as stores will encourage customers to buy them even when demand for them is already down as the need for them decreases. Low demand for goods always lowers prices, as modern economic principles dictate.

At christmas time a good laugh can brighten everyone's holiday. While this may not be the right thing to approach everyone on your list, you should indeed select a funny holiday card for thouse of your friends who enjoy a good laugh. Try to steer away from jokes that are a little too racy. Luckily, they just don't make too many offensive Christmas cards so you should be safe. As a litmus test for your holiday or Christmas joke card, it is best to consider if your mom or one of your co-workers would laugh at it or be offended. If you think they would both laugh, then you're all set. The important thing is to know your audience. The right thing to do is to pick different cards for different people. It is always better to send a nice holiday greeting than a distasteful card.

In decorating our homes overstuffing with these decorations may sometimes be viewed more as a clutter, thereby defeating their function themselves. It is important to consider decors that are elegant and functional. Picking the right decors and placing them in the appropriate part of house matters a lot. It is also important to involve family members in the decorating process. Considering their opinions and suggestions and involving them in the actual decorating of your home will strengthen family ties and increase familial bonding. It is one of the best opportunities to teach your family, especially your children about values like love, and giving and sharing.

Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas for Every Hobby

Decorating the Christmas tree is a tradition that most people enjoy and look forward to year after year. However, if you've been using the same old tired decorations for the last decade, it may be time to freshen things up and try something new. If you're looking for some new Christmas tree decorating ideas, we've got five unique themes that are based on your personality and hobbies. No matter who you are or what you like to do, these ideas can be adapted to reflect everyone's unique sense of style.

1. The Artist's Tree
This is a really fun theme for someone who is passionate about art. If you enjoy a particular medium, such as sketching, consider decorating a tree with pencils, small sketch pads, sandpaper blocks, and other tools of the trade. You might even consider making a few small sketches that you could display on the tree, too. For someone who enjoys painting, you could decorate with paintbrushes, paint trays, and small pots of paint (well sealed, of course). The Artist's Tree can be as fun and creative as you want it to be, and can be easily adapted to any type of art that you enjoy.

2. The Cook or Baker's Tree
For those who love cooking and/or baking, why not decorate a fun tree to display in or near the kitchen? Decorate it with spatulas, wooden spoons, and other cooking utensils and implements. Cookie cutters are also a fun touch for someone who enjoys baking. Other nice decorations include popcorn strings, empty spice jars, and favorite recipe cards with a hole punched in one end and tied with a ribbon.

3. The Seamstress's Tree
If you enjoy sewing or any other craft, decorate your holiday tree for it! Depending on the type of craft you enjoy, you could decorate with thimbles, colorful yarns, spools of thread, and pincushions. Neatly rolled fat quarters of fabric are a fun touch for a quilter, just as knitting or crochet needles are perfect for someone who works with yarn. And any seamstress would also love a few tape measures wound around the tree like tinsel.

4. The Fisherman's Tree
A fisherman's tree can be a real visual delight, with the many colorful and interesting lures available. Make a trip to your local sportsmen's store and pick up a variety of lures in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Other nice touches are small fish nets, spools of fishing line, and any fish-shaped ornaments you can find. Top the tree off with a new fisherman's hat, and you'll have a unique Christmas tree that's sure to inspire many fish tales during the holiday season!

5. The Handyman or Woodworker's Tree
This is another enjoyable decorating theme if you have someone in the house who likes to work with their hands. While many tools are too heavy to use as decorations on a tree, it is possible to buy smaller versions of most tools. Small tape measures, flat head or Phillips screw drivers, draftsman's pencils, wood scraps, and large nuts and bolts all make interesting decorations for this theme.

If none of the hobbies we've discussed are of interest to you, then adapt your own Christmas tree decorating ideas based on your personality and interests. Whether you're a stamp collector, an automobile enthusiast, animal lover, or computer guru, the possibilities are endless when it comes to unique and interesting Christmas tree decorating themes. Just allow your ideas to be inspired by your hobbies, and you'll end up with an amazing tree that really reflects your personality.

Christmas Garland History

The Christmas garlands tradition in America was brought from Europe by the early settlers. Ropes of garland were usually made after the fall harvest. Making and selling Christmas greens brought enough income to furnish many suits of Sunday clothes and a new bonnet when there was little else to do after harvest. Staples, like pine, spruce, and cedar trees that were used could be found in the nearby woods. Greens were gathered by day and in the evening the greens were twisted into garlands around the fireplace. Usually someone could complete twenty to forty yards in an evening.

In the 1800's wagons and boats filled with aromatic Christmas greens announced the beginning of the Christmas season. Boxwood, hemlock, mountain laurel, holly, cedar blue berries, myrtle, and princess pine were used as highlights for the Christmas ropes. Other materials used to decorate were corn husks, dried grasses, the orange and scarlet pods of bittersweet, moss, dried fruits, and the red berries of black alder. Churches, business, hospitals, and florist purchased the majority of the woven decorated greens and other Christmas decor. The abundance and price range of the Christmas greens allowed everyone to participate in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas event as we do today with Christmas shopping.

In the early 1900's natural Christmas foliage and Christmas greens became less abundant in the countryside. With the introduction of plastic artificial Christmas foliages and Christmas greens we could now make Christmas decorations without endangering nature. Plastic holly and evergreen were the most realistic of these early reproductions. With the introduction of silk (polyvinyl) flowers and greenery the quality and realistic looking reproductions of Christmas decor was greatly enhanced. In 1963 the first polyvinyl or PVC artificial Christmas trees, picks and greens hit the market. Technical advances in the manufacturing process have created the most beautiful Christmas decorations to date. Today, with the production of the artificial Christmas foliage, Christmas poinsettias, and Christmas greens, the colors and variety of the Christmas decor is endless.

Christmas Poinsettia Flower History.

The Mexican poinsettia, known as the Christmas flower in North America, is used in most Christmas decorations, due to its red color and because the Christmas poinsettia blooms mainly in December. Native to Mexico, it is called Flower of the Holy Night there. The Mexican poinsettias are commonly bright red and now the Mexican poinsettia comes in pink, white, and other colors. The bright petals of the Mexican poinsettia, which look like flowers, are actually the upper leaves of the plant, called bracts. Some say these star-shaped bracts symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. These beautiful Christmas poinsettia flowers, which have become a symbol of Christmas, are used to decorate festive holiday decor for the Christmas holidays.

Outside of the Mexican territory this beautiful red leafed Christmas flower that is used to decorate for Christmas is known as the Poinsettia named after the former US ambassador to Mexico, Dr. Joel R. Poinsett who became the first United States ambassador to Mexico in 1825. Dr. Poinsett of Charleston, South Carolina introduced the poinsettia to the United States when he returned home in 1835 from his ambassadorship. History has said that Dr. Poinsett liked the flower so much that he dedicated the last years of his life to making the "poinsettia", the symbol for Christmas, throughout the rest of the world. Today the Christmas poinsettia is the most popular Christmas flower for Christmas decorating in the United States. The poinsettia is also a popular household plant often used throughout the Christmas holidays. Other common names for the poinsettia include the Christmas flower, lobster flower, and Mexican flame leaf. Even though the poinsettia is a beautiful holiday flower you should be aware that the poinsettia's hollow stem contains a milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes and the poinsettia stems should be handled with caution.

Setting Up your Pre-Lit Christmas Tree

Christmas Decorations: Christmas Decorations & Ornaments

Putting up Christmas decorations, ornaments and a tree each Christmas is just such a great feeling. The joy and warmth it brings, particularly when all the family are involved; well, it just has to be the greatest feeling all year! But to get the best out of it takes some thought and planning.

If done properly Christmas decorations just turn your home into a Christmas wonderland. And when you set up decorations and lights outside you are sharing your love of Christmas with everyone who passes by.

First though you must always be safe. Many fires have started through misuse of Christmas decorations. Never put inflammable decorations or ornaments near a fire or any such source of heat. Always read the safety instructions. Your Christmas tree can be a hazard if drapes or curtains are left to hang too close or touch it as the lights can get quite hot. Never use real candles on your tree.

And always ensure that if you place electrical decorations or ornaments outside that they clearly state they are suitable for external use.

Before buying any Christmas decorations or ornaments, you must consider your existing home decor and the 'look and feel' of your house. For example, if your interior is classical then ultra-modern decorations, ornaments and Christmas trees will upset the balance and look out of place. In the same way if your house is furnished and decorated in a modern minimalist style, stuffing it full of older style Christmas cheer will just not look right.

This applies especially to your Christmas tree which is the focal point of your decorations, and as such you need to consider the type, color and size before diving in and buying one. You can have traditional style green ones on which you place tree lights, or, you can get really modern ones in a variety of colors already pre-lit.

Dressing the tree can be easy or difficult depending on how you go about it. The best way is to add the lights first. Start at the bottom and wind your way up to the top. Spend some time adjusting here and there until you are happy that they look balanced throughout the tree. Switch the lights on to test this.

Next wind on the garlands and adjust back and forth until you are happy that the lights and garlands are in a good balance. Finally, add your other decorations and ornaments, again achieving balance through trial and error.

As you read this though, time is very short. To complete your Christmas decorations shopping fast and safely you can go here Christmas Decorations & Ornaments and save money too.

Christmas Decoration Ideas for the Season

If you're anything like most people, December 1st marks that annual tradition of pulling those green Rubbermaid bins down from the attic, up from the basement, or out from under the bed, and stringing up the trusty old lights, well-worn Christmas decorations, and the seen-better-days Nativity Set. Put on some Christmas music, start mixing some wassail, and you're off to a great start.

But in case you're looking for a bit more this Christmas—a bit of decorating moxie, perhaps—here are five ideas that you can put into practice this Christmas season.

Why just one Christmas tree?

Here's a great idea to multiply the Christmas spirit all around the house—add more Christmas trees. It may sound bizarre, it is actually a relatively inexpensive and enjoyable way to decorate. If you don't already own a few Christmas trees from bygone eras, you can purchase one for a few dollars during the post-Christmas sales. Instead of a single tree in one corner of your living room, try putting up one large tree and one or two additional smaller trees. Put a miniature tree in the dining room, family room, or even a bedroom. With a few lights, beads, and bows, you can elegantly decorate your tree and spread the holiday cheer around the house.

No white Christmas? Bring it inside.

If there is no snow falling, but you're longing for a white Christmas, don't despair. You can bring the white Christmas inside. You can evoke images of a glistening icy tree by using white ribbon, silver garland, white drop ornaments, and white lights on your tree. To suggest drifts of snow, add white cotton to the mantel and prop Christmas decorations in it. Put paper snowflakes in the windows as a decorative plus. If you're not opposed to cleaning up after the holiday has passed, you can purchase fake snow at most decorating stores and spread it strategically around decorations for an added effect.

Freshen up the Walls.

You may have amazing decorating taste, but come the holiday season, the existing wall art just won't match the holiday mood. Try buying some Christmas prints, similar in size, but with different subject matter. A painting of a Christmas tree, a lovely winter scene, or holiday images can totally change a room from what it once was.

Realizing Wreath Power.

Wreaths are often overlooked but can be an incredible powerful design choice. While wreaths look great on doors, they also function great as indoor decoration also. Instead of your typical pictures or paintings on the walls, replace them with a series of wreaths. Wreaths can vary in style and color. You can even use wreaths woven with Christmas lights. In case you want to add a beautiful scent and fresh appeal to your wreath decorating, purchase wreaths made from real trees. You could also hang mini wreaths in your windows or even try a wreath as a centerpiece on your table.

Write on it.

Want to really add holiday joy into your living space? Spell it out. You can buy 3-D letters at local decorating stores or make your own from Styrofoam and poster board. Mount these letters on walls, atop mantels, or in windows to spell brief holiday messages like "Joy," "Peace," or "Noel."

Wholesale Christmas Decorations

Well now that Christmas is finally around the corner there a chance to get into that festive spirit. I don't know about you but Christmas is definitely my favorite time of year and not only because of the beautiful decorations and everyone's spirits are lifted. While these are good reasons another reason is because the market is filled with buyers. People come online to buy products for Christmas, decorations and all sorts. Sales triple around December. Not only do the iPhones and iPods I sell, increase revenue substantially, but the fact I buy wholesale Christmas decorations and sell them off.

That's right buying Christmas decorations on wholesale is a very profitable market. Look to eBay and you will see. However eBay is not the only place you can sell these. There are many stalls around looking to make extra money for Christmas. What I do is I bundle up these decorations and make packs of 5 or 10 and sell them to people at markets and stalls. These decorations allow the market sellers to make a lot of money selling the decorations individually packed.

Wholesale Christmas decorations are solely a $1500+ business per week. The fact is once these sellers need more decorations, who are they going to call? Me obviously. You can easily take advantage of a good situation. Its basically a win win situation for both parties. You sell the goods on wholesale while still making a profit. The market seller sells these on at a increased price and also profits. Christmas ornaments can also be profitable when buying from a wholesaler.

You can also sell these on eBay under the wholesale lots. People look there daily to get a bargain and there are many to be bought. Obviously Christmas decorations on wholesale are not the only products you can do this with. As I mentioned you could sell mobile phones, iPods, the list goes on. However, taking advantage of a profitable season is where you can make a lot of money. For example, Halloween just passed. Do you think I made money selling costumes? That's a definite yes! Wholesale Halloween costumes sell like crazy. Festival times are here to stay why not make money in an untapped niche?

Ok so how does this work you might ask?

Firstly you need a wholesaler or manufacturer that supplies these goods to you. These wholesale prices are incredible and when you sell these items on you could make anywhere from $10-$70 a piece. Obviously depends on the quantity you bought and the price you are selling for. Wholesale Christmas decorations are one thing, however, there are so more opportunities you can profit from while helping others at the same time.
